Yonkers Raceway was founded in 1899 as the Empire City Race Track. The half-mile standardbred harness racing track and attached Racino is owned by the five sons of Pittsburgh Steelers legendary owner Art Rooney. The Rooney family first bought the track in 1972.
Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway underwent a $225 million renovation in 2006 that was originally designed to include 7,500 slot machine games. In March 2007, a the third phase was completed bringing the VLT total to 5,300.
